Sunday 22nd October saw Round 1 of the Frozen Fingers Dragon Force 65 Winter Championship Series on what was a relatively bright day with a strong breeze at about 20mph plus at times. However, it proved to be a difficult day for some, with the wind coming primarily from the WSW and veering W at times over and round the Fort creating gust and holes!
It was a windward/leeward course, starting between marks 8 and 9, a beat down to 12, a run down to 9, back to 12, then 9 again and finish between 12 and the bank.
We welcomed Buzz Coleman and Jamie Cornwell–Stevens after a long absence and a new young member Jay Daltrey for his first competitive RC Yacht race.
Whilst everybody started on ‘A’ sails initially, as the wind increased in strength it caused some skippers issues and so after a couple of races, most skippers changed down to ‘B’ sails for the rest of the day. The only skipper to have a permanent issue was Geoff Appleton who retired after race 3 due to a goose neck problem.
In his inimitable style, Buzz Coleman took 8 out of the 9 races only loosing the last race of the day to John Newton after getting caught on mark 12 and so was the overall winner on 7 points. There was some close racing between John Newton, Glenn Meekcoms and Jamie Cornwell-Stevens , but at the end of the day, John Newton with his better consistency was second on 15 points followed by Glenn Meekcoms on 21 points. It was obvious that some skippers struggled with the wind and it’s varying conditions, but hopefully they have learnt a little to help them in future events.
Being Round 1 of the Frozen Fingers 2017/18 Dragon Force 65 Winter Championship Series the places are as above.
