Sunday 24th September 2017 saw the final round of the Summer Dragon Force 65 Sunday Championship Series on what was a good sunny day. The wind was initially primarily for the East and a gentle breeze which made the A+ sails the order of the day.
This created a problem in terms of setting a course, but it was eventually decided to make it a triangle and sausage all on Starboard, starting between mark 6 and the bank, up to X, down to 7, back to 6, up X, back to 6 and finish between marks 7 and 8. This was considered to be a different but interesting course, which did appear to cause some skippers an issue in at least the first race!
However, after two races the wind had veered to south-east and so there was a change to a windward/leeward course, starting between 5 and 6, a beat to 8, down to 5, a beat to 8, back to 5 and finish between marks 7 and 8. At the same time the wind increased to about 10 mph gusting occasionally to 12 mph, but everybody stayed on their A+ sails.
Whilst John Newton won all the races with 7 points, there was some close competition for second a third place between Dave Crane and George Patten, with Dave’s overall consistency helping to take second place on 16 points and George third on 21 points. As you will see we welcomed Dave Sellens back, albeit for just one race, following an extended absence due to an on going health issue – we wish Dave all the best for the future.
Being the final round of the Summer Dragon Force 65 Sunday Championship Series, leaves John Newton as the overall winner on 62 points followed by Dennis Graham on 55 points and Glenn Meekcoms third on 46 points. It should be pointed out that Dennis was away at the Dragon Force 65 Nationals in Eastbourne and so unable to challenge for first place on the day.
