Round 9 of the Sunday Dragon Force 65 Championship Series took place on 10th September 2017 on what was an overcast day with a strong wind primarily from the SW and gradually strengthening as the day went on. Whilst there was some substantial floating weed along the bank stretching out about 2 – 3 metres, a clear launching area was established.
With this in mind the course was two rounds of a triangle, starting between marks 8 and 9, a beat to 12, down to 8, then 7, back to 12, down to 8, then to 7 and finish between marks 11 and 12.
With 13 skippers on the day, it was decided to have two skippers for each race to act as observers with average points being allocated for those race(s). For the first two races there was a mixture of sails used, with some skippers opting to use ‘B’ whilst others used ‘A’. However as the day went on skippers gradually changed down to ‘B’ such by the lunch break everybody was on ‘B’
After a few races, Rodney Latham suffered water ingress and so lost control and consequently had to retire. Various skippers had issues throughout the day, including, Bill Still, Dave Crane, and Malcolm Schaffer. There was some very close racing at times, especially between John Newton and Dennis Graham, with tactics playing a part at times. At the end of the day, both John and Dennis ended up on 10 points with John taking the overall win based on his 5 wins versus Dennis four wins. Glenn Meekcoms was third on 16 points.
