On Sunday 6th August, there was a great turn out of 17 skippers for round 4 of the Dragon Force 65 Sunday Championship Series. It was a lovely day, with a reasonable wind primarily from the SW, but veering to WSW at times and gradually increasing in strength.
It was a windward/leeward course starting between marks 8 and 9 with a beat to mark 12, back to mark 9, down to 12 back to 9 and finish between mark 12 and the bank.
There were five skippers who stated and remained on A+ rigs, namely, Dennis Graham, Glenn Meekcoms, Keith Gray, George Patten and Howard Dalton, although they seem struggle slightly as the wind increased. Whilst some would say they had a slight advantage, they were able to be beaten with the conventional A rig. A number of skippers, namely Ian Kemp, Steve Bines and Dave Crane suffered various issues throughout the day, and we welcomed Malcolm Schaffer back after a prolonged absence due to his recent move. Due to the number of skippers sailing and in an attempt to help skippers get used to observing, it was decided to take two skippers off for each race, which did seem to improve some of the rule observation! Those who were observing were then allocated average points for the day, for the race(s) they missed.
With some consistent sailing, John Newton was able to beat those on A+ rigs on a number of occasions thereby taking the overall win on the day with 11 points. Dennis Graham and Glenn Meekcoms were joint second with 14 points, with Dennis taking the position based on count back.
