Round 5 of the Summer Mid-week IOM Championship Series took place on an overcast and damp Wednesday 2nd August 2017. Whilst the wind in the car park gave a false impression, the skippers all agreed that it was No.2 sails for the day. This was quickly confirmed as we approached the lake, with a strong breeze at 15 – 17 mph primarily from the SW.
It was a windward/leeward course, starting between marks 8 and 9, down to 13, back to 9, down to 13, back to 9 and finish between marks 11 and 12.
After race 2 Terry Wright’s downhaul broke and so a break was taken to repair it. Racing then continued with the wind gradually increasing in strength until Graham Bartholomew suffered a winch issue, allowing John Newton and John Horsfield to pass Graham to take first and second. At this point another break was taken to allow Graham to take a look at his winch, but unfortunately it soon became clear that it was terminal. By this time the wind had increased to 25 – 28 mph with a gust up to 33 mph and the rest decided to also call it day as the forecast rain was just starting to come down.
Therefore, Graham Bartholomew was the overall winner on the day on 3 points, followed by John Newton on 5 points and John Horsfield third on 8 points.
Following Round 5, Graham Bartholomew continues to lead the Summer Mid-week IOM Championship Series on 18 points, followed by John Horsfield on 11 points and John Newton third on 7 points.
