Wednesday 26th July 2017 was Round 4 of the Summer Mid-week IOM Championship Series on a warm day with a good breeze initially at 10 – 12 mph from the SSW increasing to 15 – 20 mph for race 7 onwards.
The start was between 8 and 9 then a beat up to 12, a run down to 5, back to 12, down to 5 and finishing on the start line.
The Fleet started on No. 1 rigs but all changed to No. 2 after race 7. Geoff Appleton had battery trouble from the outset and John Horsfield followed him later in the morning with dead batteries.
Graham Bartholomew’s jib swivel came loose in race 2 meaning he could not tack and retired and then missed race 3 doing a repair. In the last 4 races, on No. 2 rig, Graham revelled in the conditions and opened up quite large gaps to the chasing boats.
Jim La Roche was the only one to survive race 7 on No. 1 rig as the rest decided to spare the boats and rigs after violent nosedives, with rudders and half the fins out of the water. Jim was also the only one to complete all races and sailed very well.
John Horsfield was always in contention until he ran out of battery power, whilst Terry struggled with his No. 1 rig but got the boat going well with his No. 2 rig.
