Wednesday 12th July was round 2 of the Summer Mid-week IOM Championship Series and started off as a blustery wet day. However the rain soon stopped and as the day progressed the sun begin to shine and it warmed up. It was a strong wind primarily from the NW backing to NNW at times and gusting such that skippers on No. 1 rig struggled at times.
It was a windward/leeward course, starting between marks 10 and 11, up to mark 9, then down to mark 14, back to mark 9, down to mark 14 and finish between mark 12 and the bank.
Graham Bartholomew was the only sensible skipper to change down to No. 2 after the first heat but just before the lunch break as the wind had diminished, during lunch he changed back to No. 1. We welcomed Jim La Roche sailing his IOM for the very first time and initially he did quite well but seemed to struggle as the day went on. Whereas John newton struggled for the first four races, but then came into his own for the final five, with John Horsfield remaining quite consistent throughout the day. This was a testing day for Terry Wright as it was his first experience of using No.1 sails in high winds, but as the day went on he started to cope reasonably well.
