Sunday 28th May saw another good turn out of Dragon Force 65 boats at Coalhouse Fort RYC. It was a lovely day, albeit there was very little wind, which was primarily from the SE but backing to ESE at times. This led to a windward/leeward course in the middle of the lake, starting between marks 5 and 6, up to 8, back to 6 and finish between marks 7 and 8.
Most skippers used their A rigs but four, namely Dennis Graham, Glenn Meekcoms, Jim La Roche and Dave Sellens initially started with the now legal A+ rig. However, after the first race Jim had problems with his jib balance weight and so changed back to his A rig and Dave Sellens lent his boat to two prospective members to test with hopefully a successful outcome. In the meantime, John Newton lent his boat to Terry Wright, our newest member who is waiting for a Dragon Force 65 to race.
Whilst it was somewhat obvious that Dennis and Glenn did have an advantage with their A+ rigs, it should be remembered that they are both good Dragon Force 65 skippers and would likely have been up the front even with their A rigs. As it was, at the end of the day Dennis was the overall winner on 9 points, followed by Glenn on 13 points and Malcolm Schaffer third on 25 points.
|4||Jim la Roche||90||40.0||2.0||11.0||9.0||8.0||5.0||5.0||5.0||4.0||5.0||6.0|
With four events and one discard, Dennis Graham leads the Dragon Force 65 Sunday Series with four points, from Malcolm Schaffer on 10 points and John Newton and John Lambert joint third on 14 points, but John newton taking the position by virtue of his first place in week three.
|11||Jim La Roche||990||11||9||9||4||33||11||22|
Whilst there will be some discussion regarding the use of A+ rigs versus A rigs and the apparent advantage to be gained, it has to be remembered that low wind at Coalhouse Fort is not normal and as such, this one off result should not influence skippers too much. After all, it is not necessarily the winning but the taking part and enjoying the sport that is important.
Round 5 is next Sunday 11th June 2017.
