Round 2 of the IOM Monthly Championship Series took place on Wednesday 29th March 2017. It was a bright day with a strong wind primarily from the SW, which led to a triangle and sausage course at the southern end of the lake. The start was between marks 8 and 9, down to mark 13, then mark 14, back to mark x, down to mark 13, back to mark x and finish between marks 7 and 8.
With the wind varying in strength from time to time, John Newton and Geoff Appleton started the day on No. 2 sails with everybody else on No.1 sails. The No.2 sails had the advantage at times although No. 1 sails did benefit on the long run. With the wind continuing to vary in strength, those skippers who started on No. 1 sails changed down to No.2 sails at lunch time, although John Horsfield suffered an electrical issue. Malcolm Schaffer had an issue with his No. 2 sails so retired whilst Geoff Appleton also had electrical issues after race 5 and so retired.
Colin Goodman was consistent throughout with 9 wins although was challenged on the odd occasion by John Newton when the wind gusted causing Colin’s boat to nose dive. John was second on 16 points, with Graham Bartholomew, who struggled on No. 1 sails at times third on 17 points.
Being Round 2 of the Monthly IOM Championship Series, Geoff Appleton and Graham Bartholomew hold joint first on 7 points, whilst Colin Goodman, Vernon Appleton and John Newton are joint third on 8 points.
Round 3 of the Monthly IOM Championship Series will take place on Wednesday 26th April, whilst Round 1 of the Spring Mid-week IOM Championship Series will start on Wednesday 5th April.
