The penultimate round of the Frozen Fingers 65 Championship Series took place on a very cold Sunday 12th February 2017. Initially it was a strong wind from the NNE which veered to ENE and eventually E as the day went on. Some skippers decided to start on ‘B’ Sails but soon found they were disadvantaged and so at the first coffee break changed up to ‘A’ sails to join the rest of the fleet.
Because the wind varied so much there were several changes to the course, which started as a windward/leeward course in the middle of the lake with rounds to port, but this was then changed to two rounds of a triangle all on port, but eventually ended up as two rounds of a triangle all on starboard.
Whilst Buzz Coleman was beaten into first on three occasions, due primarily to him making a mistake, he dominated the racing as usual, and so was the overall winner on 13 points. With John Newton and Howard Dalton taking the remaining wins between them, there was some close racing with the rest of the fleet, but with his greater consistency, John was able to take second on 33 points, followed by Howard in third on 46 points. Four points then separated the next four skippers, namely, Malcolm Schaffer, Glenn Meekcoms and Angela Mears, demonstrating just how close the racing was.
This being the penultimate round of the Frozen Fingers Dragon Force 65 Championship Series, there is still only one discard but does lead to a change of leadership. Buzz Coleman and John Newton both have 10 points, but with three wins versus one, Buzz now leads the Championship, followed by John, with Dennis Graham dropping to third on 11 points, and Glenn Meekcoms not far behind on 13 points. So, all still to play for in the final round on Sunday March 26th 2017.

Just a quick reminder that the Dragon Force 65 Monthly Championship starts in March, so hopefully we will see all skippers taking part in that at some point – please take a look at the ‘Events Diary’ on the web site for all the dates.
