The penultimate round of the Autumn Mid-week Championship took place on Wednesday 14th December 2016. Initially there was very little wind from the SSE, but as they day went on, the wind increased and varied in direction several times from SSE to SSW and all points in between. This caused the course to change several times, but was primarily a windward/leeward course at the northern end of the lake.
With several skippers missing races for various reasons, there was a bit of a shake up in the final positions, although there was some very close racing at times – however, I think Colin Goodman was giving some of us a chance to challenge him, which John Newton took advantage of one one occasion!!
Obviously, Colin was the overall winner on the day with 11 points, followed by John Newton on 24 points, and Malcolm Schaffer third on 35 points.
Being the penultimate round and two discards, Colin Goodman still leads the Autumn Mid-week IOM Championship Series on 4 points, followed by Graham Bartholomew on 9 points. The fight for third place is contested by three skipper on 12 points, namely, John Newton, Geoff Appleton and Vernon Appleton. This leaves it all to play for in the final round, John Newton is currently in third, with Geoff in fourth based on count back. However, neither John Newton or Geoff Appleton will not be participating next week so leaves the position open for Vernon to take – watch this space.
The final round of the Autumn Mid-week IOM Championship Series will take place on Wednesday 21st December 2016, assuming enough skippers are available, so please try to make it so that there is a final race of the year.
Just a quick reminder we will be sailing on IOM’s on Wednesday 28th December 2016, but this will be an informal day, enabling skippers to have a bit of a play without taking things to seriously and blowing away all the cobwebs of Christmas, so we would be pleased to see anybody. Also an opportunity for non IOM skippers to have a go at sailing an IOM as we will have a spare IOM for them to try, so please come along and have a go!!
