Wednesday 28th September was a free sailing day with Round 1 of the Winter Mid-week IOM Championship Series starting next Wednesday 5th October.
It was a warm day with quite a strong breeze primarily from the SW which led to some skippers using No.1 sails and others on No. 2. Malcolm Schaffer had a winch problem right from the start which meant he did not race at all; Geoff Appleton had an electrical problem initially which he managed to sort and started on No. 2 but then changed to No. 1; Dave Sellens had various teething problems with his MX16 and so was off the water more than on; similarly, John Coster and Peter Herbert who both started on No. 2 sails had various issues.
Whilst Graham Bartholomew and Vernon Appleton started on No. 1 sails; John Newton and Andy Seymour started on No. 2, with Andy changing up to No. 1 after race 4. Vernon suffered and electrical issue and so retired after race 2. This left it open for Graham Bartholomew to be the overall winner on the day on 7 points, followed by Andy Seymour on 14 points and John Newton third on 16 points.
