Round 4 of the Monthly Dragon Force 65 Championship took place on Sunday 21st August 2016. It was a little overcast initially but the sun soon came out with a westerly wind in the main. This was gusting quite high initially and so skippers all put No. 2 sails on, but before racing actually started the wind dropped and so everybody quickly changed back to No. 1.
With the wind coming primarily from the west and so rounding the Fort causing it to veer in all sorts of directions, the course was a triangle and a beat at the North end of the lake, starting between marks 2 and 10; up to mark 9; down to mark 8; back to mark 10 and finish between marks 8 and 9. With the wind coming over and round the Fort, it created great holes causing boats to tack from starboard to port and back again all in a matter of seconds. This was difficult for the skippers and so it came down to who could adjust to the conditions at any point in time. Two skippers, namely Malcolm Schaffer and Steve Bines suffered electrical problems and so retired early, whilst Ian Kemp had a brief battery issue and John Newton had a repairable main sail issue.
At the end of the day, John Newton was the overall winner on 14 points, followed by Geoff Appleton on 26 points, with Dave Bland a very creditable third on 31 points.
This being Round 4 of the Dragon Force 65 Monthly Championship, the first discard kicks in, but John Newton still leads with 3 points, followed by Glenn Meekcoms and Dave Bland both on 10 points, with Glenn taking the second position based on count back and two seconds versus Dave’s two thirds.
