As we drove to the lake on Wednesday 27th July 2016, for Round 4 of the Summer Mid-week IOM Championship Series it was raining quite heavily. However, as we arrived it had virtually stopped and the day turned out to be quite pleasant albeit overcast until later when the sun tried to come out.
There was a reasonably strong breeze initially from the SW but as the day went on it veered to a more WSW. This led to a windward/leeward course at the southern end of the lake, the start being between marks 7 and 10 down to mark 5 back to the unmarked white mark, back to 5 then to the unmarked mark again and finishing between 7 and 10. With the wind as it was this created a bit of a bend towards the 5 mark as it was approached which some skippers took advantage of.
Whilst seven skippers started, this soon dropped down to six when Malcolm Schaffer had an electrical problem which appeared to affect the winch, then down to five when Geoff Appleton had to leave early, followed by Peter Herbert, and then Ray Bland with a cracked jib.
The overall winner on the day was Vernon Appleton on 12 points followed by Graham Bartholomew on 12 points and John Newton third on 18 points.
With one discard now coming into effect, Colin Goodman continues to lead the Summer Mid-week IOM Championship Series on 3 points, followed by Graham Bartholomew on 6 points and Vernon Appleton third on 7 points. The next six places are very close with only 4 points covering them.
